Play Reading on the 30th: THE DUCHESS OF MALFI by John Webster

Play Reading on the 30th: THE DUCHESS OF MALFI by John Webster

This week, the UBC Players Club is holding a reading of the classic Jacobean tragedy The Duchess of Malfi, written by John Webster in 1613. The reading will be held on Friday the 30th from 3-6pm in I.K. Barber 461.

One of the masterpieces of 17th-century drama, The Duchess of Malfi tells the chilling tale of how a love story transformed into a nightmare. When the widowed Duchess of Malfi decides to remarry below her station, her two brothers set out to destroy her and claim her inheritance for themselves. What follows is a brutal and blood-soaked tragedy showcasing the conflicts and paradoxes of class, power, and gender in Jacobean England during the final years of Shakespeare.

This Friday, the UBC Players’ Club is reading the first part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes by Tony Kushner. Set during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, Angels in America follows the lives of a gay couple in a New York, a closeted Mormon clerk and his wife, and a powerful Republican lawyer as their relationships unravel and reform in the face of a looming apocalypse of Biblical proportions.

The reading will be from 3-6pm on the 16th in Irving K. Barber 461, which is in the Nass Reading Room on the fourth floor. Snacks will be provided. The play reading will be followed by the Annual General Meeting of the Players’ Club at Wreck Beach, so anyone at the reading can come down afterward if they want and end the day with bonfires and campfire songs.

CALL FOR ACTORS AND CREW – 2016 Fall Mainstage Production

CALL FOR ACTORS AND CREW – 2016 Fall Mainstage Production

Hello friends,

The UBC Players Club is seeking actors and crew members for their upcoming fall production! Auditions will be held from September 16th-18th!

Disgraced by Ayad Akhtar is more than just a play, it’s a witty and eloquent sociopolitical statement. The play enters the world of Amir and Emily and post 9/11 New York. The gripping text pulls you into a dinner party they have with their friends which quickly gets heated as religion and politics simmer to the surface. Through the journey and dialogue of the diverse characters, the audience is presented with themes like Islamaphobia and the self-identity of Muslim-Americans. By taking part in this production you will be challenging yourself as well as the current Islamaphobic rhetoric growing around the world. Disgraced is your chance to not only be a part of a beautifully written play but also to be a part of an initiative that forces people to think about the current political climate and the negative ramifications it has on our community.

If you are interested in auditioning (and we hope you are), please send the following information to [email protected] before September 15th:

– Your full name
– Phone Number
– Headshot or clear photo of yourself
– A list of your previous acting experience (if applicable)
– Your preferred audition date and any availability restrictions for that day

For the audition, you will be asked to prepare a short dramatic monologue (max. 2 mins)

There will be cold reads available, but we strongly suggest preparing something beforehand. Physical copies of your acting experience and photo are not required at the audition. However, we do ask that you arrive 10 MINUTES EARLY to your audition.

If you are interested in working crew we are looking for Lighting, Set, Costume, Prop and Sound Designers. Please send the following to [email protected] before September 18th.

– Your full name
– Phone Number
– Your portfolio (if applicable)
– A copy of your resume (if applicable)

Keep in mind that we may ask for an interview with the director before positions are given.

The Player’s Club is very excited to facilitate this very relevant and important piece of theatre. Due to the intense nature of the piece ALL cast/crew members will be asked to participate in a workshop on September 25th!

We hope to see you at auditions!
